Precious Disciple of Jesus Christ, the Daystar,

To take a firm hold of something is to hold it so tightly that it doesn’t slip through your fingers. It is to hold it with a very tight grasp because your very life depends on it.

Our Scripture verse for this week commands us to take firm hold of instruction. What instruction? God’s instruction to us in His Word. This instruction is also called wisdom.

The word that stands out in this verse is the word “firm”. God didn’t simply say to take hold of instruction. He specifically said to take firm hold of instruction. Why? Because a weak hold on anything implies the danger of losing what you are holding.

Why must we take firm hold of God’s wisdom? Because, as the end of the verse tells us, God’s wisdom is our life. A mountain climber must take firm hold of his rope because his life depends on it. Likewise, we must take firm hold of God’s wisdom because our life depends on it.

If taking firm hold of instruction, or wisdom, is our life, then not taking firm hold of it must be our death.

Take firm hold of God’s wisdom. Your very life depends on it.
