“Obey God because you are his children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of doing evil.” (April 14, 2004)
Precious Disciple of Jesus Christ, the Daystar,
When I was in college, I car-pooled with another student who drove a Volkswagen Beatle. To get to college, we had to drive along winding, mountain roads that, in some places, were quite steep.
One day, during a snowstorm, we hit an extremely icy stretch of road that led to the top of a high hill. As the Beatle sputtered its way up the hill, we prayed that we would make it to the top.
We had almost reached the flat area at the top of the hill when suddenly the car started to slip backwards. The brakes were no match for that icy road. I held my breath, wondering if we would survive the slippery slope.
At what seemed like the last minute, the car stopped sliding and just sat in the middle of the road. My friend and I breathed a sigh of relief, thankful that we weren’t killed in the careening vehicle.
Slipping is a dangerous thing, especially when it involves our spiritual life. It’s so easy to fall back into patterns that send us careening into old habits and even sin. Patterns like watching TV, surfing the Net, getting too busy working for God.
Above all, Jesus wants to have a relationship with us. Relationships take time to cultivate. And relationships can slip if we don’t give them proper attention.
Have you been slipping away from your First Love, Jesus Christ? If so, ask Him to help you get back on track. Your prayer will be music to His ears.
