Precious Disciple of Jesus Christ, the Daystar,
God doesn’t always give us what we want, but He always gives us what we need.
An unfortunate attitude has infiltrated the Christian community. That attitude is that God is our butler. Some Christians believe that they can ask God for whatever they want and He is obligated to give it to them.
God is obligated only by His Word. If His Word makes a promise, and you believe His Word, He is obligated by His Word to fulfill His promise. If His Word does not specifically promise something, God may not give it to you if it is not for your good.
Psalm 37:4 tells us that if we delight in the Lord, He will give us the desires of our heart. Notice the condition: If we delight in the Lord. To delight means to take great pleasure in, to give joy to, to seek to please. This verse can be interpreted in two ways: 1) When we seek to please God, He gives us what we desire; 2) He puts His desires for us into our hearts.
When we obey God, our will is in line with His will. When His will and our will are one, then His desires and our desires become one. It is in this sense that we can ask what we will and it will be done unto us (John 15:7). When we are one with God, His will is our will. Therefore, what we will is what He wills.
Whatever God does is motivated by His love. Let us trust ourselves to His love.
