“God did not lead them through the land of the Philistines, although that was the most direct route from Egypt to the Promised Land.”  (Exodus 13:17b)

Precious Disciple of Jesus Christ, the Daystar,

Do you ever feel that God is leading you around in circles? He gives you instructions to do something, but then it seems as though He changes His mind midstream and starts leading you in another direction. And then He changes your course again a little while later.

Such an experience is not uncommon in the Christian walk. God tells us to do something. We figure out in our minds that these are the steps we need to take to get the job done most efficiently or to reach the goal in the most expeditious manner. Yet, just as we have everything figured out, God takes us on a detour! What do we do?

It’s simple. We follow Him, and we do so without complaining!

The verse that follows our verse for this week reads, “The reason was that God felt the people might become discouraged by having to fight their way through….He thought they might return to Egypt.” So God took the Israelites on a circuitous route so that they would not be discouraged by having to fight their way through enemy attacks and thus, because of discouragement, return to Egypt.

There are two lessons we can learn from this week’s verse:

1) God has our best interests at heart when He chooses the path for our lives (Jeremiah 29:11).

2) God doesn’t allow in our lives more than we can handle (I Corinthians 10:13).

Next time you want to take the most direct route, remember that it’s the scenic route that most often turns out to be the more beautiful and the more fulfilling.
