“…but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.” (1 Kings 19:11-12)

Precious Disciple of Jesus Christ, the Daystar,
God speaks in the silence. His voice is soft and still. Have you ever wondered why? One chief reason is that God wants us to press in to Him, to draw close to Him. When we do, we are showing Him that we really desire to hear from Him. As we show God that we want a serious relationship with Him, He will respond as He promises in His Word: “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you (James 4:8).”
God is the Perfect Gentleman. He will never force Himself on us. Instead, He wants our response to Him to come from a heart that is free to choose. No one wants to be loved out of force or duty. Such a response is not love at all. Real love is always freely given with joy and abandon.
In order for us to hear God’s still, small voice, we ourselves must be still. It is in the stillness that we will not only hear God, but that we will understand Who He is (Psalm 46:10).
