Precious Disciple of Jesus Christ, the Daystar,
There is a difference between envy and jealousy. Envy is wanting something that you do not have but that someone else has. Jealousy is the fear of someone’s taking from you what you already have.
This week we’ll focus on envy. Our Scripture verse commands us to put aside envy. Envy does not have to do only with material possession; envy also involves immaterial things, like the professional success, financial prosperity, or happiness of another person.
Are you envious? Do you want something that someone else has? Do you find yourself feeling angry or bitter toward the person who has what you want? Are you resentful of the success, accomplishments, happiness, or attractive appearance of another?
Envy results when we focus on what we do not have instead of focusing on what we do have. Each of us is unique and important in the Body of Christ. Each of us is necessary. Each of us has a purpose to fulfill that no one else can fulfill.
Satan uses envy to create division in relationships, families, and churches. When we envy, we are helping Satan to achieve his vicious goal of dividing the Body of Christ.
If you are envious, repent. When you are tempted to envy someone, bless that person instead. Pray for him; do something kind for him. And finally, learn to focus on and be grateful for what you do have and not on what you don’t have. By putting aside envy and developing a grateful heart, you will be helping to bring about unity in the Body of Christ.
