Precious Disciple of Jesus Christ, the Daystar,

When someone hurts you, whether in word or in deed, do you look for a way to retaliate? It is natural instinct to want to hurt back when someone hurts us. But, as born-again followers of Jesus Christ, we are no longer to be controlled by the natural. We are to be controlled by the supernatural.

The natural response to being hurt is to hurt. The supernatural response to being hurt is to love. To respond in love does not mean to condone wrong-doing. Nor does it mean to submit to physical or verbal abuse. To respond in love means to return good for evil. Sometimes this involves confronting when confrontation is necessary, or correcting when correction is necessary.

“But,” you may ask, “what about the person who hurt me? Will he not be punished?” Our Scripture verse for this week answers that question. Vengeance belongs to God and to God alone. Why? Because only God can judge the human heart. Only God knows a person’s motives.

Be sure of this: If the person who hurt you does not repent, he will be punished by God.

If someone hurts us, let us pray that he will indeed repent. This is what Jesus did. He prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do” (Luke 23: 34). Can we as His disciples do any less?
