Precious Disciple of Jesus Christ, the Daystar,
The word “holy” comes from a Hebrew word that means “set apart”. When God commands us to be holy, He is saying, “Set yourselves apart from anything and everything that would contaminate you, even slightly, and that would compromise your relationship with Me.”
Is there something in your life that is separating you from an open and transparent relationshp with God? Some little corner of your life that you don’t want to surrender to Him or that you’re hoping He won’t notice?
Maybe it’s that slightly off-color sitcom you watch every week, or that bowl of ice cream you just have to have every night before bedtime. Or maybe it’s that money you earn under the table and don’t want to claim on your tax return, or that porno site you’re flirting with, thinking that one little peek won ‘t hurt. All of these things compromise your purity as a disciple of Jesus Christ.
Perhaps the obstacle is not a something, but a someone. Are you in a relationship that clearly violates the Word of God? For instance, if you are born again, are you dating someone who is not, in the hope of converting him or her? If so, you are treading on dangerous ground. Or perhaps you hang out with unbelieving friends or co-workers in places you should not be.
Our Lord is coming back for a church “without spot or wrinkle” (Ephesians 5: 27). It’s time to cleanse ourselves from whatever compromises our relationship with Him. He is a consuming fire, and the impure cannot stand in His Presence. They will be consumed. Only the holy will stand in His Presence (Matthew 5: 8). Therefore, let us be holy as our God is holy.
