Do you dread Monday morning because it means going back to a job you hate? Do you dread attacking those cluttered closets because it means hours–maybe days–of trying to sort out what goes where? Do you dread confronting that co-worker who has been dumping on you with her marital problems?

What is dread? It is the expectation that something bad will occur rather than the expectation that something good will occur. Dread is so prevalent in our lives that we hardly even notice it. Yet dread is a form of fear, a very insidious form with potentially the same consequences.

Dread keeps us from enjoying to the fullest those pleasant experiences that we know are coming to a close. For instance, you may have been enjoying a great weekend of relaxation with family or friends. Then the thought of having to go back to work on Monday morning strikes you. Suddenly, the enjoyment you have been experiencing turns to dread. Dread has robbed you of the pleasure of a great weekend.

Or you may be facing a problem that involves a necessary but potentially unpleasant confrontation with an employee. The persistent thought of that upcoming confrontation has your stomach tied up in knots and keeps you from enjoying the great meal your wife prepared for you.

Like all fear, dread has its roots in Satan, the father of fear. The Bible, God’s instruction manual for man, tells us that Satan comes to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). Well, dread certainly steals our joy, doesn’t it? It robs us not only of present joy; it robs us of future joy as well.

How? Well, have you ever figuratively held your breath wondering what bad thing is going to happen to you next? Especially after a few good things have happened to you? That’s dread. Dread tells us that since some good things have happened to us, we must be in for a really bad one. Plain and simple, dread is bondage.

So how do we deal with dread? We deal with it spiritually because like all fear, dread originates in the spiritual realm. There are two basic spiritual forces at work in the earth: the force of faith and the force of fear. All other spiritual forces emanate from these two. Since dread is a form of the spiritual force of fear, we must deal with dread spiritually.

There is only one way to deal with spiritual matters and that is to go to God and get His instructions on how to do so. You’ll find God’s instructions on how to deal with dread in the Bible, His Manufacturer’s Manual for man. What you’ll discover in that Book is that “God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (1 Timothy 1:7). You’ll also discover that only God’s children have His power and His authority to overcome the spiritual forces of evil. So if you’re not God’s child, it won’t work for you.

But I have great news! You can become God’s child if you want to. All you have to do is ask Jesus Christ to come into your life. With Him comes all the power and all the authority to overcome every problem you’ll ever face—even the problem of dread.
