Whats It Like Being an Author? (30-45 minutes)
In this session, targeted to elementary school children, Dr. MaryAnn discusses the life of an author. She covers how to know if you should be a writer, what to do to prepare, and how one actually enters the publishing world. She will also answer questions from students.
Writing a Poem (30-45 minutes)
In this fun-filled session, Dr. MaryAnn will guide the class in creating a short poem. She will discuss the elements of poetry, including word choice, similes and metaphors, rhythm, and rhyme. By the end of the session, students will have created a short poem to take home. Some classes will want to compile the poems into a class poetry booklet.This session is targeted to middle-grade and junior hight school students (ages 8-14). Dr. MaryAnn will explain the elements of a good story, including characterization, plot, dialogue, and setting. Under her guidance, students will outline a short story that they can then complete later in class or at home. Teachers may wish to compile the stories into a class booklet.

This session is targeted to middle-grade and junior high school students. Dr. MaryAnn will discuss the key elements in writing a good story, including characterization, plotting, dialogue, and setting. Students will be encouraged to outline their story for completion later at school or at home. Teachers may wish to compile the stories into a class booklet.
